Dear Church,
We're back at Duncan park again this week. And, continuing our tradition, it will be a BYO picnic lunch.
Our journey through Genesis continues this week in Genesis 2. Tim and Joe discuss Genesis 2:18–25, focusing on the creation of Eve and the deeper meaning behind the passage. They explain that God’s statement “It is not good for man to be alone” reflects the incompleteness of Adam as the image of a triune God, and that the Hebrew word for “helper” (ezer) implies an equal “battle mate,” not an inferior assistant. God has Adam name the animals so he realizes no creature is truly comparable to him, preparing him to appreciate the creation of woman. They explore the symbolism of God putting Adam into a death-like sleep, removing something significant from his side, and “building” Eve—paralleling themes of death, resurrection, and Christ and the Church in Ephesians 5. They conclude by noting the passage’s ongoing relevance to questions of manhood, womanhood, marriage, and cultural challenges to God’s created order.
