On this week's episode Tim and Stephen discuss Genesis 42, where the famine drives Joseph's brothers down to Egypt to unknowingly fulfill the dreams that once moved them to throw their brother into a pit. This part of the story begins with Jacob asking his sons why they look at one another, and notice what sin does to a man: these are brothers strong enough to wipe out a village, now sitting paralyzed by a guilt they have carried for years. As the ten brothers bow before the ruler of Egypt, Joseph answers not with revenge but with a carefully planned test: three days in prison, Simeon bound before their eyes, Benjamin demanded, and their money quietly restored to their sacks so that they have the means to come back, something to fear, and an additional test of honesty. Their confession that "we are truly guilty concerning our brother" comes some fifteen years after the fact. The episode closes on Reuben's offer of his own two sons as surety for Benjamin, revealing him as a man still ineffectively grasping after authority he's disqualified from, in contrast to his brother who is quietly ruling all Egypt (and the unlikely other brother, Judah, who will succeed where Reuben cannot--but more about that next week).
